Patti Stiles (Australia), Artistic Director Impro Melbourne and International teacher/director/performer.

  • Description: Genres contain conventions such as themes, locations or characters that readers expect to find.  These conventions help identify the genre and are an element of consistency. In many genres characters conform to acceptable social rules labeled as acceptable male and female behavior. Today’s world is different.  Our social dynamics and gender identification has changed and yet our storytelling is still shackled to these historical roles. By questioning, challenging and exploring the purpose of the character in the story and removing gender assumptions we break open new levels of impro play and possibilities for all of our improvisers.
